Hi just looking at your site for the first time, I used to go to Stonelaw high until moving to Aberdeen in 92 how long did it last before it changed? thought I would visit the school before I move with my family to Canada but I supose things have to change. I hear Rutherglen isn't even classed as Glasgow any more? Is this true? Love to hear from you Suzy

Rutherglen Academy began in 1925 and lasted until the advent of Comprehensive Education in 1970. In August that year some children moved from RA up to the brand new Cathkin High School in Whitlawburn, Cambuslang while other children - mostly from the Rutherglen area - were retained at the old Academy building in Melrose Avenue, which was initially a four-year school taking pupils to O-Grades only. Those wishing to progress to Highers and CSYS had to go up to Cathkin - which many did.
Stonelaw began life as an amalgamation of Rutherglen RA pupils and Gallowflat pupils. In the case of Cathkin High, it was RA pupils and pupils from Gateside, Cambuslang. Prior to 1970, in the days of the 11-Plus examination, both Gallowflat and Gateside were Junior Secondary Schools, whereas RA was a Senior Secondary School. You had to pass the 11-Plus exam to get there. This system was abandonded because it was considered divisive and not in the best interests of every pupil.
A new Stonelaw High School opened in 1998 in Calderwood Road. There are plans to refurbish the school soon. A new Cathkin High is under construction in Holmhills Wood Community Park Cambuslang just down from the current building on Western Road. This new school is due to open in August 2008 whereat, we understand, the old school will be demolished and private flats built on the site.
In 1996 Rutherglen came out of Glasgow City and into the control of South Lanarkshire Council based in Hamilton.
Thank you for getting in touch. Our very best wishes to you and your family for the move to Canada. |

Killing time on the day of my retirement and visited the site. Brought back many memories of teachers and friends. I left the Academy in May 1970. My best pals at the school were Billy Dunsmore, Dougie McKay, George Lamb, Gordon Morrison, Rab Allan and Gregor Williamson.

Clara Clucks name was indeed Miss Macdairmid - she favoured matching shoes and handbags and went to the phone box at the corner of Johnstone Drive each lunchtime to phone her elderly mother to make sure she was alright - a caring daughter but IMHO nae maths teacher!!!!!!

Hey I've just come across the website. Just Brilliant ! Well I was at RA from 64 to 68 ( I think! ) I remember all the teachers mentioned in the site for that era but I can't remember a lot of pupils names. I do remember Garry Blackwood, Ian Dickson, John Latta, jim Paton and some of the Carmunnock Mob. I also remeber some excellent "fights down the Lane" ay four o'clock. Does any body remember the bike shed. It was like a small roofless dungeon beside the street and if the Janny (Can't remember his name either)forgot to open the locked steel gate at 4.oopm, you had to climb down from the Melrose Avenue, hook your bike over your shoulder and climb back up again. Ah those were the good times ! Keep upi the good work Cheers Wyndham
