Comprehensive Education
Rutherglen & Cambuslang
Today there are three comprehensive schools in the area:

Cathkin High, on Western Road Whitlawburn mostly takes pupils from Cambuslang, Halfway, Westburn, Springhall, Cathkin and Carmunnock. In 2000 it was designated a ‘Community School’ and thus now plays host to other activities unconnected directly with secondary education. For example there is a nursery, and South Lanarkshire Council has offices there. Meanwhile, the roll is a shadow of its former self. Some 800 weans I believe - which, when you consider that, in August 1970, there were nigh on 2000, is a quite staggering statistic. Not enough babies being born clearly.

Trinity High, in Burn Place Cambuslang is the Catholic school and accepts pupils from roughly the same areas as did Rutherglen Academy in the old days, when Catholic pupils attended either Holy Cross in Hamilton or Holyrood over in Crosshill. Trinity’s web site is here.

Stonelaw High, recently rebuilt in Calderwood Road, is the main school for those living in Rutherglen, Burnside, Eastfield etc., though many parents who live outwith the normal catchment area are, for reasons best known to themselves, often inclined to send their children to Stonelaw in preference to Cathkin. Indeed, for several years, Uddingston Grammar, a few stops away by electric train, also accepted pupils from the area served by all the schools mentioned above. Though it doesn’t now.

It should further be noted that the traditional non-comprehensive, fee-paying schools like Hutcheson’s Grammar, The High School of Glasgow (now up at Crow Road) and St. Aloysuis are still very popular with those who can afford them.
